Nearly every human achievement from developing written language to making a turkey sandwich requires group effort, not just individual effort. Even the breakthroughs of an individual genius like Albert Einstein did not conjure up out of thin air. They build on extensive previous work by others. A human group that accomplishes all these things can be described as a supermind. I define a supermind as a group of individuals acting together in seemingly intelligent ways. Superminds come in many forms. They include hierarchies found in most businesses and other organizations; markets that help create and exchange a variety of goods and services; communities.
That use norms and reputations to guide the behavior of many professional, social, and geographical groups; and those common in governments and some other organizations democratic system. All superminds possess a collective intelligence that enables them to accomplish things that no individual in the group can accomplish alone.
